It is planned that Sand sculpture park will be open in early July

Heavy and intense rain has significantly damaged the sand sculptures, so it has been decided to temporarily close the sand sculpture park. It should be noted that the norm of precipitation in June in Jelgava is 70 millimeters, but in the last day it reached 58.2 millimeters. The municipal establishment "Kultūra" has already contacted the sand sculptors and after Summer solstice celebrations they are going to restore the sculptures so that they can be seen by visitors again in the beginning of July.

"The summer had already started with very rainy weather. It was raining in the process of making the sculptures, so unlike other years they could not dry out properly. At the moment sculptures are not aesthetically pleasing, "reveals Mintauts Buškevics, the head of the municipal establishment "Kultūra ".

The weather has always been a big challenge for the creation of any sculpture, but the organizers have experienced a lot and created solutions for various situations in more than 16 years since the sand sculptures were created in Jelgava. Even today, "Kultūra" has already addressed the artists, inviting them to get involved in the restoration of the sculptures. "The work that has been invested in creation of the park is huge, that is why we want the damaged sculptures to be restored, so that all summer long both the people of Jelgava and the guests of the city can enjoy the art of sand," says M. Buškevics, adding that the artists could start working on the restoration of the sculptures after Latvian tradition of Summer solstice celebrations.  It depends to a large extent on the weather, which is highly variable. "After the Midsummer Festival, the restoration of the sculptures will start, and we hope that at the beginning of July the sand park will be able to open its gates to visitors again," says M. Buškevics.
